Ancelotti Quickly Chooses a Replacement

The Brazilian national team received a painful blow just four days before the start of their 2026 World Cup campaign, after it was confirmed that defender Wesley, the Roma star, would miss the tournament due to a serious injury sustained in the final friendly match against Egypt. This forced coach Carlo Ancelotti to make an urgent decision by calling up midfielder Ederson as a replacement.

Medical examinations conducted by Brazil's medical staff confirmed that Wesley suffered a muscle tear in his left adductor muscle, an injury that will definitively rule him out of the World Cup — a harsh blow to the "Seleção's" ambitions of reclaiming the World Cup title absent from their cabinet since 2002.

Early Injury Spoils the Joy

Alarm bells rang at Cleveland Stadium just 15 minutes into the friendly against Egypt when Wesley felt severe pain in his left thigh, forcing him to request an immediate substitution. Danilo came on in the 17th minute amid visible concern on the player's and coaching staff's faces.

Although Brazil won the match 2-1, the joy of victory was overshadowed by deep worry over the sight of the right-back leaving the pitch in clear pain, indicating the seriousness of the injury.

Ancelotti Acknowledges the Heavy Loss

Immediately after the match, Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti hinted that the situation was not promising, confirming that the player was suffering from a "muscular problem" and accepting his potential absence by saying: "It's a shame to lose him. We have to wait for the test results, but we have good players to replace him."

The medical results confirmed the fears, showing a muscle tear requiring a recovery period longer than the tournament's duration, thus ending Wesley's dream of participating in the World Cup.

A Heavy Blow to the Defense

Wesley's absence is a major blow to Brazil's defense, which already suffers from a lack of options on the flanks, especially at right-back — considered one of the weakest links in the "Seleção's" lineup.

Ederson as a Replacement... Strengthening the Midfield

To fill the void left by Wesley's absence, Brazil's technical staff decided to call up Ederson, a midfielder from Atalanta, in a surprising move reflecting Ancelotti's desire to strengthen the midfield rather than calling up another defender.

Ederson had previously been named in Brazil's squad in 2015 by Ancelotti himself, although he has yet to play any official match for the "Seleção," making this opportunity a dream come true for the 28-year-old.

Danilo the First Option

In light of Wesley's absence, Danilo emerges as the primary option for the right-back position during the World Cup, thanks to his extensive experience and multiple appearances with Brazil in major tournaments.

Ancelotti also has other options on the defensive flanks, including Paulo Henrique from Vasco da Gama and Vitinho from Botafogo, as well as several central defenders capable of playing in multiple positions, among them: Alex Ribeiro (Lille), Léo Ortiz (Flamengo), Fabrício Bruno (Cruzeiro), Nathan (Real Betis), Thiago Silva (Porto), and Vitor Reis (Girona).
