Government Unveils New University Map Including Independent Faculties and AI Institutions

The government has revealed, as part of its final projects before the end of its term (October 2021–2026), a new university map, the most prominent features of which include independent faculties of law, economics, and social sciences, as well as artificial intelligence institutions.

In this context, the government has prepared a draft decree aimed at continuing the implementation of reforms designed to develop the higher education, scientific research, and innovation system, improve the quality of training, and enhance territorial equity in access to university services. This has been linked to the demographic, economic, and social transformations taking place in various regions of the Kingdom, as well as the growing need to diversify training offerings and develop university specializations in line with labor market requirements and new development trends.

The government's plan in rolling out the new university map is based on dividing multidisciplinary faculties in Al Hoceima, Nador, and Safi into specialized university institutions covering the fields of legal, political, economic, and management sciences; applied sciences; and languages, literature, arts, humanities, and social sciences.

The reform also includes dividing the faculties of legal, economic, and social sciences in Fez, Tetouan, Tangier, Marrakech, and Kelaat Sraghna into independent institutions, by establishing faculties of law and political sciences and others of economics and management, with the aim of reducing overcrowding and improving the management of academic pathways.

Furthermore, the government decided to change the name of the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy in Oujda to become the "Faculty of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Dentistry," following the example of other medical faculties in Fez, Casablanca, and Rabat, which reflects the expansion of training offerings in the health sector. The government is also moving toward establishing a number of new institutions in Rabat, Kenitra, Settat, Taroudant, and Benslimane.

These include the Higher School of Business Administration under Mohammed V University in Rabat, the Faculty of Economics and Management in Kenitra, the Faculty of Science and Technology in Taroudant, in addition to the National Institute for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence in Benslimane. Also planned are the establishment of a Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy in Settat, and a Faculty of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Dentistry in Kenitra, as part of strengthening training offerings in health professions and supporting major national projects related to generalizing social protection and improving access to health services.
